After several sub par races, the #20 Team headed to
Richmond International Raceway looking to kick their season in high gear.
With a new crew chief, a new tire compound from Goodyear and the new body
style of 2004, Mike Bliss and the #20 Team having been struggling to find
the top-ten consistency that is required to challenge in the NASCAR Busch
Series.
"I definitely don't think the season has gone up to
our standards," commented Mike Bliss. "We know we have good equipment,
good engines, and a great team. We are just have not found the balance and
feel that these cars want. We are working extremely hard to get this
program back in the top ten each week."
After a good morning practice, Bliss was forced to
qualify from one of the early spots. Fighting a loose track and high
temperatures, Bliss was only able to wheel a lap that would qualify him in
the 12th position. The team tried several different combinations during
the final practice but still was not sold on their race package. After
several long meetings on Friday, the team felt comfortable with the
changes for the race.
As the evening temperatures cooled, the #20 Team
prepared for the Funai 250. As the race started, Bliss immediately started
fighting a tight race car. Having trouble turning the car on the bottom,
he began to drop spots. Back in the 18th position on lap 90 when the third
caution of the night flew, Bliss followed the leaders onto pit road.
Making some aggressive changes with wedge, the track bar and air pressure,
the #20 Team serviced the car and sent Bliss back to the race track.
The changes seem to agree with the #20 Chevrolet as
by lap 100, Bliss found his way into the top 10. As he continued to gain
spots, he found himself challenging for the top 5 as they approached the
final round of pit stops. The crew continued to provide their stellar
stops and returned Bliss to the track in the sixth position. The race
would be slowed with a myriad of cautions during the final 80 laps and
Bliss would be forced to settle for a 8th place finish.
"We really needed a long green flag run," said
Bliss, following the race. "Our car was at its best about 50 laps into the
run. That was when we really started gaining positions. But we will leave
with a top-ten finish. Believe me, we are not at all pleased with this
finish, but I believe it is a step in the right direction"
Pole Winner Kyle Busch led 232 of 250 laps to take
his first Busch Series Victory.
