Nazareth, PA - Coming off a top-ten finish at
Richmond International Raceway, Mike Bliss and the #20 Spectrum Controls /
Rockwell Automation / JGR Team looked to the final race at Nazareth
Speedway as a chance to continue to build on their growing momentum. A
blown tire late in the race would end the day of the #20 car and its bid
for a second straight top ten finish.
As NASCAR continues to adjust its schedule to help
the race teams cut cost, the Goulds Pump 200 was a one day event separated
into two days. With the pressure of only a two hour practice for the teams
to get their cars dialed in with a consistent race setup as well as a fast
qualifying setup, the #20 team got to work. After having a top ten car
during the practice, Bliss was only able to muster the 16th quickest lap
during qualifying.
Knowing that Nazareth is a tough track to pass,
track position would be crucial. As the race started, racing was furious.
Bliss quickly fought his way up the leaderboard and settled into the 12th
position for a long green flag run. On lap 82, the first caution flag of
the day flew with Bliss in the 10th position.
Bliss followed the leaders to pit road. Reporting
the car tight, Crew Chief Steve Addington chose to change four tires and a
small adjustment on the trackbar. Team Rock Solid preformed another
flawless pit stop in less than 15 seconds and gained five spots for the
#20 car. As the race restarted, Bliss raced early with the leaders but the
tight car forced him back to just outside the top-10. On lap 142, while
running in the 12th position, Bliss cut a tire in the middle of turns
three & four and made hard contact with the outside wall. After returning
from the infield car center, Bliss learned the car was beyond repair. He
would finish the race in the 33rd position, 58 laps down from the leader.
"It is frustrating," commented Bliss following the
race. "We were about 20 laps from our final pit stop of the day, when the
tire let go. We haven't had any problems with tires in the last two
seasons, so I am sure this is just a fluke thing. Goodyear has provided us
with some great tires."
"Our car had been tight all day, but it really
seemed to like the long run. Although we would start the run tight, the
car never got tighter. We were not as dominate as we had hoped, but we
were headed for a top-ten finish. I have to thank my guys again, because
their stops are the fastest on pit road. One of these they will make the
difference in us winning some races."
Martin Truex, Jr. would make a last lap pass of
leader Bobby Hamilton Jr. to win his fourth Busch Series event of the
season.
Next up for the NASCAR Busch Series is the Pepsi 300
at Nashville Superspeedway on Saturday April 10.
